FG, states sued over free education

THE federal and the 36 states governments have been sued over the non-implementation of Child’s Rights Act 2003 and free Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act 2004.

Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, who instituted the suit, wanted a Federal High Court in Abuja to compel the defendants to provide “compulsory and free primary and junior secondary school education for every Nigerian child.”

Those who were said to have joined as defendants were the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Attorneys-General of all the 36 states.

Falana was also seeking an order directing all the defendants to, with immediate effect, remove all children from the streets and enrol them in appropriate schools.

He contended that the non-implementation of the two acts was responsible for social vices in the nation.
