Paul Newman Contributes $10 Million to a Scholarship Fund at Alma Mater
The actor donated money to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, to help deserving, underpriviledged students get to college.

The recently retired Paul Newman, who announced his decision to stop acting, decided to give $10 million to Kenyon College, his alma mater, to establish its largest scholarship fund. The small liberal arts college in Gambier, Ohio, which is known for excellence in writing education, said in a statement on Friday that Newman's gift is part of the college's $230 million fundraising campaign.

Said Newman, "This fund is meant to be more than just a gift to a college. I believe strongly that we should be doing whatever we can to make all higher education opportunities available to deserving students." Newman and his wife were named the honorary chairs of Kenyon's fundraising campaign from 1998 to 2001.

The actor, who graduated from Kenyon in 1949, studied English, Theater, and Economics at the school, and began a laundry service to earn extra money. "I owe Kenyon a great deal. I even started my first business there, and I depended on that extra $60 a week. I personally feel great affection and a debt of gratitude for Kenyon."

The accomplished and generous Newman wants to share that experience with students all across the world, helping to bring struggling high schoolers to a place where they can grow, learn, and remember forever.
