The Frank W. LaRocca Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded to support lung cancer research, today announced Bret Newman, a senior at Marlboro High School, as the 2007 recipient of the LaRocca Memorial scholarship. The endowment was awarded to Newman by Frank J. LaRocca at the Marlboro High School Senior Awards Ceremony on June 12.
Newman, who lost his mother to lung cancer earlier this year, plans to attend the University of Vermont in the fall to study Music Therapy. At Marlboro High School, Newman was a founding member of the guitar club and active on the volleyball team. He is the recent recipient of Lock and Key, commending students that achieved a B average or higher throughout high school. Newman also lends a helping hand to Habitat for Humanity and the American Cancer Society.
The Frank W. LaRocca Memorial Foundation was founded in 2006 after the passing of Frank W. LaRocca after a difficult bout with lung cancer. Through community outreach and a scholarship fund, the foundation strives to educate those on the severity of lung cancer and raise money for research.
“My father was the type of person who enjoyed helping others no matter how big or small the need,” said Frank J. LaRocca. “This scholarship keeps his memory alive, pays tribute to his spirit of goodwill, and supports the dreams of future leaders like Bret Newman and others to follow in his footsteps.”
In addition to awarding a scholarship to a Marlboro High School student each year, the foundation also holds an annual golf outing and is organizing a fundraising walk in September.Labels: academy awards, career training, free college, free education, scholarship, study abroad |
