Career account allows access to students' grades, financial information |
Incoming students who come to West Lafayette for Day on Campus can sign up and begin using their career account immediately, said Steve Tally, spokesman for Information Technology at Purdue.
Once students get a career account they can begin using their Purdue e-mail account and access SSINFO.
Purdue e-mail accounts can be set up as a POP 3 account using an e-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook Express or students can access their e-mail online at webmail.purdue.edu.
SSINFO is a web-based service that students can use to do things like check their schedule, make payments and research financial options. In addition to that, SSINFO is the primary vehicle for students to access their grades and check their academic progress.
Students can also use SSINFO to reset their career account password. Tally said students should take precautions in choosing their password and think carefully about the other activities they participate in on the Internet.
"I would recommend that students go to purdue.edu/securepurdue, there is a lot of good information on that Web site on how to protect yourself," said Tally.
Students using ResNet, Purdue's resident network that provides Internet service to the residence halls, will need to sign an acceptable use policy and pay a $55 fee before they can begin using the Internet.
Tally also recommends that students use caution when posting information about them on the web.
"It is very public; I think when people post things they think that it will only be viewed by their own circle of friends," Tally said. "The information can be viewed by a wide variety of people and not all of those people have good intentions."
