Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Friday announced that the last date for admission to government schools in the Capital had been extended by 10 days in view of requests by parents and residents' welfare associations in the wake of great rush. Interestingly, there is a heavy rush of girl students seeking admission to schools, he added. Mr. Lovely said the admission process in all government schools had been extended up to July 10. Earlier, the admission process was to have ended on Friday (June 30). Mr. Lovely said directions had been issued to all government schools in the Capital to admit students till the new deadline. It was an encouraging sign, he added, that there was such a heavy rush for admission to government school. Attributing it to the new admission policy implemented last year, he said the thrust was on ensuring that students after passing out of MCD schools enrolled themselves in government schools. Special attention was being given to the girl child for admissions in government schools. The Minister said the decision to make the admission process online since last year had yielded rich dividends; as against 1.4 lakh students joining the Class VI in government schools, the total number of students taking admission this year had touched a record figure of 2.1 lakh. The most outstanding feature was that nearly 35,000 of new 70,000 students were girls.
