CHILDREN of the Barossa's wine industry workers have been targeted by a new education scholarship aimed at helping the district's students pursue a tertiary education.
Created by the Thomas Foundation, the $6000-a-year scholarship has been set up by the former owners of Cellarmaster Wines, David and Barbara Thomas.
David Thomas chose the Barossa for his latest foundation project because he wanted to give the region something back in recognition of the role it played in the success of Cellarmaster. The company, which has since been owned by Carlton and United Breweries and Foster's, was sold again this month to a private equity group, Archer Capital.
The new scholarship, to be administered by a new philanthropic body, Foundation Barossa, is available for the 2008 academic year and offers up to $6000 annually, plus opportunities for work placement and mentoring within the Barossa Valley.
Nominations close on July 31. Forms can be obtained from The Secretary, Foundation Barossa, PO Box 503, Nuriootpa, SA 5355.

* Another new wine industry scholarship, the Wine Society's Dr Gilbert Phillips Scholarship, has been awarded to South Australian student Samuel Hambour.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to the best wine science/oenology student at either the Waite Campus of Adelaide University or the Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, to be rotated between the institutions. The winner gets to complete a vintage overseas.Labels: academy awards, career training, education online, free college, free education, high school, scholarship, study abroad |
