Cooperative announces the presentation of seven $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors in the First Electric service area. "The response to the Operation Round-Up Scholarship program is always very good. This year 64 graduating seniors applied for the scholarships. We hope that these scholarships will help to make a real difference in the lives of the recipients just as Operation Round-Up makes a big difference in the lives of donation recipients," said Don Crabbe, President/CEO.
Jonathan Giles, son of John and Susan Giles of Quitman will be attending Arkansas Tech University and majoring in Electrical Engineering or Agricultural Science. He attended Quitman High School. While in school, Jonathan was active in the Student Council, FFA, Basketball, Track and the Science Club.
He represented First Electric on the 2006 Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. He is Salutatorian of the 2007 graduating class, listed on the National Honor Roll, a scholar athlete and recipient of a U.S. Achievement Academy Award. Giles has worked on American Red Cross blood drives, and is a first responder for the Cove Creek/Pearson Fire Department. He has also been involved in peer tutoring for elementary students and worked on a drive to send useful items to our troops in Iraq.
The scholarship were evaluated by an independent committee, and were selected based on scholastic achievement, school and community involvement, and financial need. The scholarships are awarded annually from the Operation Round-Up Trust fund.
The Operation Round-Up Trust fund is made possible by First Electric Members who allow their monthly electric bills to be rounded up to the next even dollar amount.
